Leaving the usual spirituality center of this column today to talk about the voices in your head. If you woke up thinking that you have outlived your usefulness, or that your family would be better off without you, then PLEASE, get help today. You were created for a purpose, and that purpose is to love God with your whole being. Yes, He wants you to do other things before you come home to Him. You Are supposed to be on planet earth until He calls you home.
Now, let’s shy away from the demons possibility for today, at least. The Bible tells us Jesus drove out demons (in fact, He forbade them to tell who He was; it seems Jesus’ own people couldn’t recognize Him but the devil surely could) and the church also has a ritual for driving out demons. Instead, let’s discuss when the physical and mental body can be ill.
People get measles, swine flu, colds, and lyme disease. Those are illnesses announced over the water cooler. So are other illnesses in various parts of the body. But, oh, I’m bipolar, he’s depressed, she’s suicidal. That’s scandalous. In 2010?! No, that’s also an illness. And treatable. It’s not hush, hush. It’s not shameful. And please, do not hide. Get treatment. The prophet sat under a tree, exhausted, disgusted with his life. Lord, take me home now. He didn’t mean to his house. He meant he wanted to die. The Lord responded with an angel who brought water and food. Get up and eat and drink, the Angel told him, because you need strength for the journey. You still have work to do was the message.
Sometimes the message will not be as abrupt for you. Sometimes it may be much more clear. The message may be “Get a job or your baby will starve.”
Taking “me” time to get well is acceptable to your Father in heaven. You know, the crowds pressed Jesus for more and more miracles and more and more teaching, exhausting Him tremendously. He did not always give them what they wanted. Sometimes when one asked for healing, He said “Your sins are forgiven.” In fact, in His time on earth, He did not even heal each person He came into contact with. He had a specific job, one He tried to keep on task with. And how did he do that? By recharging His batteries with prayer, by alone time with God His Father. By withdrawing for a time. By going to parties and going out in a boat. He tried to take some time for Himself, even if sometimes the Bible shows it wasn’t successful.
One way Jesus was the perfect man was because He showed us the way to live. He prayed, He worked, He played, He rested, and all in perfect balance. He delighted in His friendships and delighted in his prayers, even conversing with Moses. Because of that balance and His complete trust in His Father, no storms rattled His sleep. And He wants the same for you. He wants peace for you in this life by drawing near to Him and trusting that He made you perfectly in His image. He loves you.
