World Cup 2010 – USA v Slovenia in Friday’s match – where’s Slovenia? – As the USA v Slovenia soccer match gets underway in Johannesburg, South Africa Friday morning, USA is favored. One of the dramatic stories of the match is that this pairing pins the largest country in the tournament, the United States, with a population of 300 million against the smallest country in the tournament, Slovenia, which has just over 2 million.
Many American fans are asking, just where is Slovenia?
Slovenia is located at the Northeastern tip of the Adriatic Sea. It borders Italy on its west; Austria to the north; Hungary to the east; and Croatia to its south. If you find Italy on the map, look to the right of its northeast corner.
Located where it is, Slovenia, or Slovenija in its native language, likely has more in common culturally with the alpine country of Switzerland than with the Balkin states. It’s a former part of Yugoslavia, and its split was relatively peaceful, at least as perceived by some Americans, as compared to the struggles of Croatia, Bosnia, etc.
UPDATE: Slovenia scored its first goal against the superpower, USA, early in the match and another in the first half.
The team beat Algeria in its match on June 13, 2010.
One thing’s for sure, if tiny Slovenia beats the USA today, it will help many Americans know where they are on the map.
