What is holistic health? As our healthcare system continues to change, people are looking toward complimentary care for optimum health and wellness and this can be confusing and a little intimidating to most! Holistic health is a wellness approach that incorporates the body and mind as well as the physical, emotional/mental and spiritual aspects of an individual.
Firstly, when the term spiritual is used, it does not refer to religious beliefs. Spirituality refers to the essence of who you are and how you personally feel connected in this world. This connection or oftentimes the feeling of disconnect can greatly affect overall health and well being!
Traditional medical doctors are trained to treat the body and concentration is given to presented symptoms and in most cases is a reactive approach to treatment rather than a proactive one. Similarly, conventional mental health professionals treat the mind but never seem to connect the state of the body to what ails the mind!.
The above being said, a holistic health approach views body, mind and spirit as interdependent entities and seeks for the underlying causes of symptoms, rather than masking them with drugs and unnecessary treatments.
The definition of holistic health may encompass many different elements and is sometimes referred to as complimentary health, alternative health or natural health. Choosing a holistic health approach does not mean that one does not believe in traditional medicine nor does it mean that both Holistic health methods and traditional methods can not be combined successfully with great benefit to the patient!
Many different kinds of health practitioners embrace a holistic health approach. Mental Health Counselors, educators, chiropractors, naturopaths, doctors of environmental medicine, homeopaths, dentists and even some medical doctors are becoming enlightened. This is great news and the way the future of healthcare should be!
Within the holistic health arena you will see a variety of different treatment approaches. The focus may be on avenues such as environmental health, acupressure, meditation practices, nutritional counseling, massage, homeopathy, dietary changes, food allergies, vitamin supplementation, exercise, color, light and sound therapies, herbs, organic living to name just a few!
Holistic health embraces wellness approaches in the holistic field that are considered to be wholesome, healthy and not harmful or toxic to the individual or the environment. They promote balance and harmony for the individual, society and the planet!
A holistic approach encourages and empowers the individual to engage in self care and become educated about their own health and become more proactive in maintaining optimum health.
An individual who chooses a holistic approach to wellness will be a partner with their holistic provider and an active participant in their treatment and health care! With those things the individual is also rewarded with a better connection to self, what the body, mind, and spirit needs as well as the joy of being more in control of maintaining that health and well being!
