One of Vancouver’s most famous tourist attractions is the Capilano Suspension Bridge that visitors tour for approximately $30/adult. However, this popular site can get overcrowded and lose its “eco” character with the park’s three restaurants, gift shop, and live musical acts. By contrast, locals can enjoy the same height-phobic thrills without the admission fee or crowds at lesser known Lynn Canyon Park.
Lynn Canyon Park, located east of North Vancouver in Lynn Valley, provides free access to a suspension bridge swaying 50 meters above a canyon. If you get up the nerve to cross the narrow overpass, you will have two trail options: to the left is Rice Lake and to the right you’ll find Twin Falls.
Rice Lake is popular in the summer for fishing and swimming. You can also bypass the suspension bridge and park in a nearby lot if you plan to spend a few hours at the lake.
The Twin Falls trail offers an easy 10 minute hike through the rainforest up and down staircases until you reach the waterfall. Once there, you can cross a short stable bridge and walk along the river where you’ll likely find a good resting area to spread a blanket and picnic.
Due to the enormous size of Lynn Canyon Park- 617 acres- hikers will find other alluring spots to visit such as Baden Powell Trail. As the park’s website indicates, this trail crosses the entire North Shore region, connecting numerous parks in its path including Lynn Canyon and Capilano. It’s one of the longer hikes in Lynn Canyon, taking a little more than an hour to complete.
Meanwhile, in the summer children will love the 30 foot pool despite its cold temperatures. The pool is easy to get to with a flat, leisurely walk and is ideal for pool- and sun-bathers alike.
As you leave the pool, you can head up a tall staircase towards Lynn Valley Rd. to the Pipe Bridge. More so than the Suspension Bridge, the Pipe Bridge gives ample room to cross the canyon with the family and take pictures along the way.
While experienced Vancouver travellers and popular tourism websites will recommend a trip to the well-known Capilano Suspension Bridge, keep in mind the hidden gem of Lynn Valley Park just 10 minutes away, and you may retain a greater amount of your elbow room, paycheck, and respect for nature.
