Get ready Buzz and Woody fans! Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3 movie hits the Orlando theatres this weekend. Old Toy Story fans will relive the memories and new fans will be made. If your kids fall into one of the fan categories, a Toy Story birthday party is sure to be on the request list this summer! Celebrate with a Woody’s Western Roundup party.
Invitations can be sent in a variety of cute “western” ways. Sent a western e-vite or order personalized invitations in Woody design from ebay. Encourage your guests to come dressed in western attire if desired. The birthday boy or girl could be dressed as Woody or Jessie. The Florida Mall Disney Store has adorable Toy Story 3 Woody and Jessie costumes and accessories.
Set the scene in your backyard. Rent or purchase some hay bales for an authentic western look. If you and your kids are crafty and artsy pick up some large appliance boxes and paint, cut, and create a western town – a saloon, a general store, a sheriff’s office and jail etc. This would also work well as a party activity for guests to work on while everyone arrived!
Purchase cowboy hats and bandanas for all partygoers to wear during the festivities. For a fun activity – they could autograph each other’s bandanas. Decorate the table with Toy Story figures from your child’s toy box. Make a centerpiece with cowboy hats and a pair of old boots (shop thrift stores and garage sales) with a bandana tied around each. Use red and white checked tablecloths and red and white party goods or go with the Toy Story 3 party sets available at your local Party City. Print wanted posters online and decorate with friends’ and family’s photos. Hang them around party area. Use cactus plants in terra cotta pots for added decorations (you might consider purchasing mini ones for take home favors).
There are oodles of fun games and activities to incorporate the western theme into your Woody and Jessie party. Have your kids paint different small rocks gold the week before and hide them in a large sand pile or sandbox. On party day have a gold digging expedition – give guests aluminum pie plates to dig for gold. Have a rompin’ rattler challenge. Let two people (helpers or guests) hold the ends of a rope and have players jump over and around while they are wiggling rope (the rattler). If you touch the rope you are out. Use the rope to form a lariat and have a contest to see who can lasso a large stuffed animal or other object. If you have a set of children’s horseshoes, use those for a horseshoe competition. Play pin the tail on Bull’s Eye. A western or Toy Story themed piñata is always a crowd pleaser.
If you want to beat the Central Florida heat, incorporate some squirt gun fun into your party activities (be sure to inform guests ahead of time if a change of clothes will be needed). Invite the guests into two teams – sheriffs and robbers. Give each child a squirt gun (they can be found at Target, Walmart, or Dollar Tree inexpensively). Let the robbers hide and have the sheriffs hunt them down. A squirt gun show down will then ensue. Play a western arcade style game with small plastic bottles and squirt guns. Give each bottle a point value and see who can squirt down the most points. Squirt guns always lead to summer fun (and they will also make great party take home favors).
Serve your guests some western food fare. Hot dogs, chilidogs, or hamburger sliders would be appropriate for this party menu. Serve chips in cowboy hats lined with bandanas for a fun serving idea. Baked beans and ants on a log would be great side dishes. Have a watermelon slices and root beer (served in beer mugs) to accompany the meal. Western themed desserts are a must. Roast marshmallows. Try your hand at creating a boot shaped or a horse cake. Use a star cookie cutter (Michael’s) and create sheriff badges from rice krispie treats or make cookies and place on cupcakes. If time is of the essence, order a Toy Story themed cake from the bakery at Publix or Walmart.
Party favors can be all the objects used in your party fun. Goody bags can include piñata candy, bandanas, cowboy hats, “gold”, squirt guns, wanted posters, sheriff badges, and plastic cowboys. Cowgirls and cowboys alike with have a rip-roaring good time at your Woody’s Western Roundup!
