Just when you thought the wonderment and originality of Toy Story had been done, the characters that started it all, do it again. Toy Story 3 opened this weekend and it is truly a masterpiece.
It has been a long time coming for this grand re-introduction of Woody, Buzz and the gang. And like the first two, it had a completely original story with all-new characters added to the mix. Also like the first two, it is clear that the creators took great pride in creating a perfectly paced, rollercoaster ride that will have you laughing, crying and cheering throughout.
The first Toy Story film re-introduced classic toys that we all grew up with. And while as children we all breathed life into our toys, the film set out to add personality to them. Toy Story 2 brought some additional lovable characters to the mix that fans of the first film could embrace just as well.
Toy Story Midway Mania opened at Disney’s California Adventure last summer featuring just about every character from both Toy Story films. But it had been 11 years since Toy Story 2 came out and 15 years since the original (has it really been that long?). While the characters are classic and timeless, the new 3D attraction is instantly current with Toy Story 3 in theatres.
Disney got a head start on things when they introduced the the Toy Story 3 character “Lots-O-Hugs Bear” to Toy Story Midway Mania a few weeks ago. Presumably the idea was to generate more interest in seeing the film. Sort of a preview, if you will. Though “Lots-O”, as he is often referred to, is only one of the new characters in Toy Story 3. Most of them are new characters but heart warmingly familiar just like Mr and Mrs Potato Head, Slinky Dog, Army Men, and Barrel-a-Monkeys.
Hard to say if Disney had ideas about the third installment when they first started plans for Toy Story Mania. It could be a ‘chicken or the egg’ situation. As in, did the attraction spawn the idea to make it a trilogy or did they know they wanted to add a third movie so they went to work on the theme park attraction?
Either way, Disney has been updating their two parks piece by piece for the past few years to feature many of the popular Pixar animation films. California Adventure started it all off when it opened with A Bug’s land. Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters came next. Then Then the updated Finding Nemo Submarine and Monsters Inc experiences were introduced. Toy Story is the only one that got an attraction AND a new movie to go along with it. And fans of the films as well as the ride will be happy to know that they will not be disappointed in the latest adventure. You will no doubt experience Toy Story Mania all over again.
