I wonder why Hollywood has not come up, yet, with a Latin version of Sex and the City. I would call it Sex and the Beach and obviously I would shoot in South Beach. The girls would be sipping on Mojitos and not Martinis, they would speak perfect English with a Spanish accent and they would be dancing salsa like pros. Their love life would be exactly the same, tormented and passionate, but their dating would be more inter-cultural.
I didn’t like Sex and the City 2. The only thing that kept me awake at the movie theater was the beauty of the actors and a couple of nice shots of Morocco where the movie was actually filmed. The plot was boring, the desert attire ridiculous, and the end unrealistic. But, because I am a huge fan of the Sex and the City show, I started to imagine working on its Miami Latin version and I found myself wondering about my cast. I came up with some interesting picks.
Penelope Cruz would be my Carrie; she is fun, dynamic and a great actress. I can see her sitting on Carrie’s bed in her old apartment writing her column, running after Big in South Beach, sipping cocktails and looking for the everlasting romance.
Constance Marie would be my Charlotte. She plays Angie in George Lopez, one of the greatest Latin comedy shows. She looks so much like her, sweet, sophisticated and has the typical look of the good girl.
Miranda’s role would be played by the talented Maribel Verdú lead actress in Pan’s Labyrinth, a wonderful and very touching Spanish movie. She seems to be the right pick to play the strong-headed, career-oriented Sex and the City’s attorney.
And for my favorite character, Samantha, I choose with no doubts Eva Mendes. Yes, she is much younger than Kim Catrall but she has an amazing body, all the curves at the right place and a nice smile. She would well represent her. For Mr. Big, well, Antonio Banderas would be perfect for the role. He is sexy, mature, sophisticated and I believe would look good with Penelope Cruz, for one thing they are both from Spain.
I also like the characters of Stanford and Anthony, I would have a great time conducting the auditions right here in Miami. I am positive I could come up with some interesting Latin-looking men to play Carrie’s and Charlotte’s best guy friends.
Remember the restaurant where the girls usually get a quick bite? How about The 11th Street Diner on the corner of Washington Avenue and 11th street? It looks a little bit dirty but it is so much Art Déco!
