When Dorothy and I returned from our four-day cruise celebrating our anniversary, we went from the Port of Long Beach to Disneyland for the day. Ready for dinner, we drove a couple miles to the Outback Steakhouse. It was the last day of our vacation, and I wanted a great steak. For several years I was a small business consultant with jobs around the country. From experience, I learned that Outback Steakhouses has extraordinary quality controls. I don’t recall ever being disappointed in the flavor or the temperature of my steak at an Outback. This was another great dining experience.
It started with being greeted warmly at the door then escorted to a booth as we requested. Our waiter, Brian, show up immediately. Throughout our dinner, Brian was extremely friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about his menu. We even had a chance to visit briefly with him and found our visit enjoyable.
While we waited on our appetizer, an order of Grilled Shrimp on the Barbie, $7.99, he delivered our Honey Wheat Bread, which was delightfully sweet without being as sweet as cake. The grilled shrimp were well seasoned, thoroughly cooked, yet firm. They came with remoulade sauce, which is made with mustard and horseradish in mayonnaise. The horseradish gave the remoulade sauce a slight kick without being overpowering.
We also ordered Blue Cheese Pecan Chopped Salads with dinner, $2.50 each. Dorothy got hers with the standard blue cheese crumbles and blue cheese dressing. I had them hold the blue cheese crumbles and exchange the dressing for their Tangy Tomato dressing. We’re both really fond of this particular salad that comes with chopped salad greens, honeyed pecans and cranberries. The Tangy Tomato has just enough bite to it.
Main Courses of Steaks and Snow Crab
My 14 ounce Ribeye, $21.99, was medium rare, exactly as ordered. As result, it was juicy, and really flavorful. Be aware that Outback seasons their ribeyes. Dorothy and I happen to really enjoy their seasonings; however, you may find that it’s too salty if you’re highly sensitive to salt. The sweet potatoes are banked to the point of becoming soft, and then slid open and filled with honey butter topped by brown sugar and cinnamon. Wonderful!
Although Dorothy ordered the six ounce Sirloin Steak and Snow Crab Special, $15.99, Outback substituted a fillet when they ran out of the sirloin’s. Dorothy said it was prepared exactly as ordered, and as tender as she hoped it would be. One of the things we really liked about the way the Outback served the snow crab is that they slit the shell for us. It was deliciously sweet and served both tender and moist without being soggy.
We finished off our meal with the Sweet Adventure Sampler Trio™, $7.99. I splurged and shared the Chocolate Thunder from Down Under® with pecan brownie. The brownie was exceptionally moist and accompanied by rich vanilla ice cream. They then drizzled Outback’s warm chocolate sauce over the brownie and ice cream before topping them with chocolate shavings and whipped cream. Dorothy then took the Carrot Cake with coconut and pecans and the Classic Cheesecake sample portions home. Later in the week, she confirmed they were both delicious.
Anytime you’re looking for an excellent dining experience in the Anaheim-Garden Grove area near Disneyland and the Anaheim convention Center, I encourage you to try the Outback Steakhouse. They serve, much more than just steaks.
By the way, watch for my next article on dining from our cruise out of Long Beach.
