The Rhode Island medical examiner has ruled that blunt force trauma was the cause of death for Kaylee and Alesia when the boat they were riding in Sunday morning, May 16, 2010, crashed into a pile of rocks known as Despair Island in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island.
The report issued by the Rhode Island Health Department does not reveal whether the girls had been drinking alcohol the evening of the boating accident or not.
Alcohol Tests During Autopsy
The ProJo.com reported today that, “Health Department spokeswoman Annemarie Beardsworth said alcohol tests are routinely done during an autopsy, but such information is released only if it is considered relevant to the death, which was not the case here.”
Michael J. Healey, spokesman for the office of Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch, said they hope to release the names of three other injured boaters that were aboard the 22-foot recreational boat during the deadly crash that took the lives of Kaylee Therrien and Alesia DeSa. Nothing new has been released since it was reported that the other survivors included a 27-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, both from Massachusetts, and a 25-year-old man from Rhode Island who were all taken to area hospitals in serious condition. However, it was mentioned in this article that one of the survivors was Kaylee Therrien’s cousin, Joel Mayer. This information is unconfirmed at the present time.
Midnight Joyride Turns Into a Fatal Accident
Richard Cromwell, the owner of Maritime Solutions, a Portsmouth, Rhode Island boat-engine repair shop, told the AP on Monday that two of his mechanics who had worked there for years, took the 22-foot Sea Ray without permission on an unauthorized “midnight joyride”. Cromwell, who also owns Freedom Boat Club, says they hit the rocks in Narragansett Bay early Sunday morning so fast that the boat went airborne and flipped.
The boat was discovered by search and rescue boats around 2:00am after a distress call was made by one of the survivors.
