It’s hard to indulge in the sights, sounds and tastes of a vacation and not see the scale inch up a bit. If the tips earlier this week weren’t enough to get you through a vacation without gaining weight, nutritionist Mary Flynn from The Miriam Hospital has more ideas. Just follow these simple suggestions to enjoy your vacation without the guilt and worry.
- The most important meal of the day: “Bring along cereal bars, pre-measured cold cereal with nuts and dried fruit. You can always pick up milk or yogurt to bring back to the room,” says Flynn. Why breakfast items? “Breakfast calories are an easy thing to control as most breakfasts you can eat in a restaurant are high in calories. If breakfast is a meal you love, have breakfast and most likely you will not be hungry for lunch so you can wait to eat again at the end of the day.” It’s all about balance.
- It’s not just for rabbits. “Salads for a meal can be a way to control calories,” Flynn notes. With many restaurants offering a variety of greens, nuts, cheese and dried fruit, making a healthy low-calorie salad is a breeze. But an important reminder: ask for the salad dressing on the side. According to Flynn, “A tablespoon of salad dressing has about 100 calories so make sure you know what you are adding to the salad — those little containers of salad dressing have at least 1/4 cup. That’s 400 calories!” She also points out that creamy salad dressings are higher in calories and most meal servings of Caesar salads top 700 calories with the dressing and the croutons.
- Don’t worry. Be happy. Flynn recommends that you don’t get too anxious about the eating part of the vacation. “You may end up overeating if you are an emotional eater. My advice is to plan to not gain weight, but do not plan to lose weight if you are following a weight loss program.
- The simplest advice: “If you do overeat one day, plan to eat less and/or move more the next day,” says Flynn. Beach chairs are great, but walking the shoreline will give you more energy and burn some calories.
So you can splurge on your vacation with a little thought, a little planning and making use of these great tips. That’s not so hard.
