It can be tough to get published. As any author, Christian or otherwise will tell you, it takes lots of work and perseverance to see your work on a book store shelf. Below are some contests that are open to unpublished writers. Some offer more cash and prestige than others, but when you are trying to make it in the publishing world, any opportunity to get your name out there is worth the effort.
Those contests offered by Christian organizations are listed first, followed by secular contests.
The Christian Writers Guild, founded by bestselling author Jerry B. Jenkins, is holding a contest for writers. The winner of Operation First Novel 2010 will win $20,000 and have their work published by Tyndale House. The deadline for entry is October 1; entry information and FAQs about the contest can be found at the Christian Writers Guild website.
Athanatos Christian Ministries has announced a book length Christian novel contest. There is a $1000 First prize and $500 second prize. Both first and second place winners will be published in the Summer of 2011. All contest information can be found at Christian Writing Contest.
Utmost Christian Writers Foundation, based in Alberta, Canada, is conducting a contest for Novice Christian Poets. The event is open to all unpublished poets. A total of $2000 in cash and publication goes to the poems selected. All entry information can be found at the Contests page of UCWF.
Southeast Missouri State University Press is accepting submissions for the 2010 Mighty River Short Story Contest. The winner will receive $500 and have the story published in Big Muddy: A Journal of the Mississippi River Valley. Entry information can be found by going to Big Muddy’s Mighty River Contest Page
Carpe Articulum Literary Review offers writers the opportunity to be published and win up to $1,250 for first place. The categories include Short Story, Novella, Poetry, and Non-Fiction. The Times/Chicken House Children’s Fiction is open to international writers of children’s fiction. The winning entry will receive 10,000.00 GBP or 14,826.00 USD and a worldwide publishing contract with Chicken House. All entry information can be found at JustAContest.com
