Time for another round of signing event updates in the New York, New York area!
On Monday, June 21st, Midtown Comics at their Times Square location is assembling a free signing event involving some of the biggest writers at Marvel Comics. These are, as the card to the left states, Brian Michael Bendis, Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction, and Christos Gage!
Brian Michael Bendis currently writes NEW AVENGERS, AVENGERS, and ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN, as well as his creator owned title POWERS, and is Marvel’s top selling writer. He has written the multi-part crossover events SECRET WAR, HOUSE OF M, SECRET INVASION and SIEGE. Prior titles he has worked on include DARK AVENGERS, MIGHTY AVENGERS, ALIAS, THE PULSE, SPIDER-WOMAN, and his most iconic run on DAREDEVIL. If you are a Marvel fan, your opinion of his work is either “love” or “hate”, but regardless he is among Marvel’s elite, in some ways more vital to their current line than many editors are. Ed Brubaker, while not quite as high up the Marvel food chain as Bendis, is still no slouch in the pyramid either; his five-plus year run on CAPTAIN AMERICA has catapulted the series in sales and recognition. He has also begun SECRET AVENGERS as well as having had runs on DAREDEVIL and UNCANNY X-MEN, and going farther back, CATWOMAN for DC; Brubaker also has his own creator owned material CRIMINAL and INCOGNITO. Matt Fraction is the creator behind CASANOVA (which has moved to Marvel’s Icon line) and is the current writer of INVINCIBLE IRON MAN and UNCANNY X-MEN; his previous series have included THE ORDER and IMMORTAL IRON FIST (alongside Ed Brubaker), and he is set to begin writing for THOR this year. Last but certainly not least, Christos Gage is the current writer of AVENGERS ACADEMY, but has also delivered top quality work for AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE, WORLD WAR HULK: X-MEN, MIGHTY AVENGERS, UNION JACK, THUNDERBOLTS, and SPIDER-MAN/X-MEN. He has also worked for DC’s Wildstorm imprint, such as on STORMWATCH: POST HUMAN DIVISION, along with some TV writing credits for “LAW AND ORDER” and “NUMB3RS”. Most of their work (aside for Bendis) is routinely featured in Picks Of Comic Book Day columns.
Their Times Square location is 200 West 40th Street on the corner of 7th Avenue. The large signs often give it away from across the street. Most MTA subways with a stop at TIME’S SQUARE will get you close enough, and they include the D,F,V,N, and R trains. Admission is free and the signing runs from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The shop has two floors so make sure to check each one!
Got to throw in something Bat-related, huh DC?
Not to be outdone, there is another free signing event being offered by the competition for both Midtown Comics and Marvel!
Jim Hanley’s Universe in Manhattan is offering a “DC Summer Showcase” event which, as the card to the right indicates, features top talent from DC Comics: Jamal Igle, Stephane Roux, Scott Snyder, and Dennis O’Neil. It takes place on Wednesday, June 23rd from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Jamal Igle is the current artist on SUPERGIRL; for more information about him, click here: www.cakechow.com/x-19829-Brooklyn-Comic-Books-Examiner~y2009m10d22-ComicStoryboard-Artist-Jamal-Igle-signing-1024-at-Brooklyns-own-Galaxy-Comics. Stephane Roux is the current artist on the recently launched ZATANNA series, and has drawn covers for a slew of DC titles such as ACTION COMICS, BIRDS OF PREY, BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL, and SUPERMAN (as well as Marvel covers for AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, MS. MARVEL, GAMMA CORPS, and the OFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE). Scott Snyder is a writing teacher at Columbia University who is currently writing Vertigo’s AMERICAN VAMPIRE featuring an arc by Stephan King, as well as having written for several Marvel Comics projects. Finally, Dennis “Denny” O’Neil is the sort who is said needs no introduction, as he is something of a legend around DC; he was a long time writer on BATMAN, DETECTIVE COMICS, BRAVE AND THE BOLD, GREEN LANTERN/GREEN ARROW, WONDER WOMAN and JUSTICE LEAGUE from the 60’s into the 80’s, and was also an editor for the BATMAN titles for over a decade after; his most memorable creation is Ra’s Al Ghul, and redefining Green Arrow as a socially conscious, urban hero. O’Niel also worked for Marvel Comics, writing IRON MAN, DAREDEVIL, and AMAZING SPIDER-MAN for a few years in the 80’s before returning to DC; he also has several novels to his credit. His commentary track for the animated DVD feature “BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHTS” alongside Kevin Conroy (longtime voice actor of Batman) is perhaps better than the feature itself.
Jim Hanley’s Universe is located at 4 West 33rd Street, right across from the Empire State Building. MTA trains that go to 34TH STREET include the B,D,F,V,N, and R trains.
