What kind of Montessori “works” are on the My Works website?
The My Works Montessori website just recently launched however there are already several “works” for each Montessori area, with new lessons to be added every month. Arranged according to the five areas of a Montessori classroom, each “work” video can be viewed separately as many times as necessary so that it can be reproduced by a parent at home or can be used as a training tool for a classroom assistant or volunteer.
When a parent views a lesson, he or she is learning about the Montessori Method and approach by simply observing and modeling the teacher and or child in the video. In Montessori, the approach of child-directed education encourages the adult to “follow the child”. When a child shows interest in a subject that is the ideal time developmentally for her to explore it. The My Works approach to parent education takes that idea one step further and “follows the needs of the parent” by having a complete website resource that a parent can turn to for easy to understand Montessori information, activities and support when they are interested and ready for it.
Some video lessons currently available on the My Works website include:
- Practical Life: Bubble Making, Fine Motor Fun, Folding, Uses for a Golf Tee and Pin Poking
- Sensorial: Sound Cylinders, Rough and Smooth Boards, Color Mixing, Smelling Jars, Color Boxes and Color Matching
- Math: Sandpaper Numbers, Memory Game, Odd & Even, Teen Boards, Fractions
- Language: Sound Lessons, Sound Blending, Sounds with Objects, Wound Bingo, Word Bingo and Matching
- Cultural & Science: Animal Coat Matching, Continent Globe, Continent Map, Living and Non-Living, Land, Air and Water, Sink & Float, Continent Boxes and Solar System
As a member, a parent is free to pick and choose which works to watch, create and use at home. It is not essential for a parent to watch all presentations or create all works offered on My Works. A child who attends a Montessori school will have opportunities to explore a wide variety of works at school. Each lesson is presented by a certified Montessori teacher in a homelike environment with no video lasting more than five minutes.
How does the My Works Montessori website work?
The My Works Montessori is a subscription based website. Members may choose to sign up for a monthly or discounted annual membership. Membership to My Works Montessori allows unlimited access to new monthly video presentations, printable downloads, access to an on-line store and a Montessori glossary and e-library.
Parent education webinars will also be available to members only. Topics will include parenting, early childhood education, developmental issues and Montessori with expert advice from child psychologists, pediatricians and certified education professionals. The first series of webinars will include: The Importance of Movement for Young Children, Developing Independence in Your Home, How to Encourage Creativity with Your Children, Looking for Learning Moments Each Day, and The Importance of Reading with Your Child.
How can My Works Montessori help with fundraising?
My Works Montessori is committed to helping promote and educate the public about Montessori education through its’ My Works Partner School program. For an annual fee, an accredited Montessori School may become a My Works Partner School and receive the following benefits, according the founders of the My Works Montessori site:
A My Works Partner School who directs new parent-member will receive 50% of the new parent-member subscription fee. The 50% that goes back to the school could be used for classroom materials, an all expense paid school field trip or be donated to a school scholarship fund for a child whose parents may not have the financial means for a Montessori education. While these are just suggestions, it should be noted that My Works Montessori Partner Schools are free to use the funds however they see fit for their school. For example, a partnered school that directs 50 parent members to subscribe to My Works would earn almost $500 per month coming back to the school.
Very soon, My Works Partner Schools information will begin to appear on the My Works Montessori website. Each school will have a space on the website to tell about their school, including contact information and logo. This will make schools visible to those who might not have considered a formal Montessori school education.
In the future, My Works would like to offer partner schools the opportunity to get in front of the camera too, show off their school a bit, maybe have them show us their favorite lessons, sing us a song, or participate in one of our round-table webinars to discuss hot topics about Montessori or offer parenting advice.
Our main purpose is to use the My Works website as an interactive online tool to complete the Montessori circle between parents and Montessori educators. We seek parents and educators from all over the world to join us and embrace parenting, discover the benefits of Montessori and why it’s important for Montessori principles to extend beyond the classroom and throughout life.
