The policy change came before the pay cuts and the .1 cent sales tax was an issue. Before all the city’s woes of a shortfall in the budget was an issue firefighters and police were allowed to take time off and show up in uniform to attend city council meetings.
When the Mayor Jones announced that pay cuts and layoffs could be forthcoming if a solution to budget shortfall wasn’t agreed upon by the council before June the fire chief and police chief put out a new policy not allowing any firefighters or police to get time off or attend city council meetings in uniform.
Now weeks later after Mayor Jones stopped pushing for pay cuts and layoffs and started pushing for the .1 cent sales tax to be passed by council members the police chief and fire chief changed the policy allowing firefighters and police to take time off and show up in uniform.
Apparently the Mobile Press Register did not interview the fire chief or anyone from the fire department in the upper management sector. But be it known that the fire chief did change the policy in not allowing firefighters to get time off to attend the council meeting in uniform when pay cuts and layoffs was an issue.
Then after pay cuts and layoffs was no longer an issue the policy was changed back to allowing firefighters to get time off in uniform but they could not get comp-time to be off they had to find someone to work in their place so they could be off to attend the city council meeting.
This decision by our police and fire chief brings to memory this bible verse James chapter 1 verses 6 through 8 that says: James 1:6 For he that doubts is like a wave of the sea driven by the wind and tossed about; James 1:7 for let not that man think that he shall receive anything from the Lord; James 1;8 He is a double- minded man, unstable in all his ways.
After knowing that the fire chief and police chief changed a policy not to allow time off for employees to attend city council meetings and then change the policy again to allowing employees time off to attend city council meetings. This sends a message to the employees that serve under these two leaders of public safety. Lack of an inability to stand up under the pressure put on them by the Mayor.
