Are you looking for ways to meet other moms in the Illinois Valley? Being a new mom is fantastic, especially when you have other moms that can lend you some support or just be an understanding, “been there” adult to talk to. The tricky part is finding other mothers that have similar interests and parenting philosophies to yours. It’s almost like dating, but with burp cloths, messy ponytails and sweat pants.
So how do you find other new moms? Here are some suggestions for beginning your mommy-friend hunt:
Libraries are great, because you can find any mommy resources you need (i.e. books, videos and magazines) and they usually have story hours or reading programs for your little ones. You can get a glimpse of other moms’ interests just by seeing what books they have in their hands. It’s also easy to strike up a conversation, “Michael Crichton? I love his books, too.” One word of advice, don’t fake that you’ve actually read something you haven’t. Lying is as big a turn-off to other moms, as it is when you’re dating. Instead, try, “Michael Crichton? I’ve never read any of his books. Which would your recommend to start me off?” Either way…you’re in.
There are so many parks in LaSalle County, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to talk to other mommies while your little one can really explore some beautiful scenery and, as he grows, find a favorite playground that suits his specific taste. Striking up a conversation is as easy as commenting on the weather, playground equipment or surroundings. Another icebreaking technique- “mommy flattery”. “I love your double-stroller. I’ve been researching them online. What do you like best about this one?” Moms like to offer advice…you’ve just made a friend.
If you’re nervous about meeting other moms “cold”, you can always try an online site. These are great, because you can join forums that speak to you as a woman and a mother, with the added bonus of knowing that the other members already have the same interests that you do. You’ll have 24-hour access to support, fun stories and updates on what’s happening in the area. If you hit it off with another mom, you can arrange a play date or a much needed mom-time meet-up at Starbucks.
If you want to expand your group of mom friends, don’t be intimidated by the process. There are thousands of moms in the Illinois Valley. Explore your friend-finding options. You can spend time with your little one and make some mom-pals, too. Every mom likes a win-win.
