This summer is poised to be full of heat thanks to new releases from R&B talent including Mario, Teairra Mari, Kelis, Christina Aguilera, Fantasia, Ciara, Dwele, Dru Hill, Bobby V., Shonetelle and more. Kicking off with releases during the month of June, including the R&B/Hip Hop album “Last Train To Paris” from Diddy and Dirty Money, music enthusiasts like you have more than Drake’s anticipated debut to worry about.
While a complete list of summer 2010 releases in R&B/Urban Pop can be found below, there are four albums that have been anticipated for weeks, if not months. Leading the charge are Christina Aguilera and Drake, artists who could be deemed more Pop and Hip Hop than R&B, each artist has incorporated R&B elements on their efforts due for release June 8 and June 15 respectively.
Her fourth and first album in over three years, Christina Aguilera’s “Bionic” features collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Ester Dean and Polow Da Don. Led by the single “Not Myself Tonight,” the effort is what Aguilera has been working on since 2006s “Back To Basics” and a greatest hits package (“Keeps Gettin’ Better”).
Fresh off earning multiple BET Award and Much Music Award nominations, Drake’s “Thank Me Later” is arguably the year’s most anticipated album next to Sade’s “Soldier of Love,” released earlier this year. A long awaited effort, “Thank Me Later” features the singles “Over,” “Find Your Love,” and “Miss Me”. The album also features collaborative efforts with The-Dream, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Alicia Keys.
The other two notable releases are also long-awaited efforts. One from American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino and the other from former Roc-A-Fella princess Teairra Mari.
While a release date has not been announced for Fantasia’s album (update: July 13), which features the single “Bittersweet,” there is a release date of June 29 for Teairra Mari’s sophomore album “At That Point”. While Mari has released countless singles since being unceremoniously dropped from Roc-A-Fella after making a splash with “Make Her Feel Good” in 2005, this is her first album to be released since that debut. “At That Point” features the rising single “Sponsor,” which follows buzzworthy cuts like “Cause A Scene,” “Hunt For You,” and “Automatic”.
