The Lone Oak Buffaloes went 9-3 last year, and made their fifth straight playoff appearance. There’s a new head coach in place for the Buffaloes, but Dean Lasseter is a familiar face for the team. The team’s former defensive coordinator ascends to the top job, and plans to try and keep the tradition going.
“I think when things are going good in a program, you try and keep the ball rolling and protect the tradition,” Lasseter said in his first interview as head coach. “We need to keep working hard.”
The Buffaloes return two starters on each side of the ball, including senior quarterback and defensive back Cooper Jones.
“He’s going to be a great leader for us this year on both sides of the ball. He brings great athletic ability, he can throw run the ball well. He’s very versatile at quarterback, and also can play some wide receiver.
Another two-way starter will be senior Hunter Cash.
“Hunter will be a slot receiver for us. He’s got great hands and runs great routes. He’s a leader on defense at safety, too.”
Up front, the team will rely on senior Keaton Smith.
“He’ll be good on both sides of the ball for us,” Lasseter said. “He should be our best lineman, he’s gotten even stronger since last year. He’s got good football knowledge, he’s a very coachable player. That really helps with a lineman.”
On defense, Trevor Lasseter will patrol at middle linebacker.
“He’s one of the kids that got moved up later and played in the playoffs and did well for us. It was good for him to get that exposure because now he’s got to step up and fill some holes.”
The Buffaloes have been moved to the new district 6-2A Div 1 with former district mate Alba-Golden, and new opponents Corsicana Mildred, Edgewood, and Scurry-Rosser. Former charter school Red Oak Life rounds out the district for their first varsity season.
“I still think Edgewood and Mildred are going to be tough,” Dean Lasseter said. “I think it’ll still be tough with some quality opponents, but overall, I think this district may be a little bit weaker than it has been in the past.”
