Have you heard of the National Employee Health and Fitness day? It’s on the 3rd Wednesday in May each year. But for local school system Clark Pleasant Community School Corporation, every day is focused on employee health and fitness.
Clark Pleasant Comm. School Corporation (CPCSC) , located in Whiteland, IN, has a full program for their employees, over 800 in total. Their program is part of the employee insurance benefits and is of no cost to anyone on the school corporation’s insurance plan.
There are two sides to the CPCSC employee wellness program; the medical screening and evaluation, and the physical fitness, nutrition and stress management. Both sides work in conjunction to provide a comprehensive program for the employees.
The medical screening and evaluation portion, provided by St. Francis Hospital, Indianapolis includes:
- Medical health screenings each year for blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol and triglycerides.
- An online Health Risk Assessment (HRA).
The physical fitness, nutrition and stress management portion, provided by OnTrack Fitness, Indianapolis includes:
- Group fitness classes, located at different schools for convenience
- Nutrition education from registered dietitian, April Adams of Greenwood
- Education classes about becoming physically active
- Periodic contests, including weight loss contest
- Initial and periodic fitness assessments to track progress
- Access to at work massage
- Newsletters/emails with wellness tips
The last semester alone, Clark Pleasant had a total weight loss of over 200 pounds through the weight loss contest. The fitness classes are also a popular part of the program. Jan Fredbeck of Whiteland Community High School says “Attending a fitness class makes sure you get a good workout, and not have to think of what to do on your own.” Employees can attend any of the classes they wish, at any location.
Wellness programs like these are a benefit to employee and employer. Offering fitness classes before teachers leave work makes it convenient for them. Having HRA’s online makes it easy for the employees to fill out. St. Francis is seeing more interest among employers as there is a positive return on investment.
Investing in a program with local companies such as St. Francis and OnTrack Fitness has added benefits for companies such as CPCSC. Unlike other programs, this one takes the management responsibilities out of the hands of already busy employees. They can choose from a “buffet” of choices to fit their needs. Also, all tracking of information, contest and classes are places it in the hands of these local companies.
