All you have to know is where you are going. The answers will come to you of their own accord. ~ Earl Nightingale.
Yesterday I hiked my very first 14,000+ ft. mountain, La Plata Peak, just outside of Aspen. It was a mesmerizing experience, full of mental and physical toughness, and mindblowing mountainous views. While La Plata is certainly not considered a “difficult 14’er”, it’s not an easy one, either. As I’m currently putting together a 14’er coaching program to help entrepreneurs break through fears and embrace risk-taking, I decided to start on a medium difficulty hike to really push myself and develop the layout of my program at the same time. I had very few expectations, other than it would be a challenging experience and lots of fun.
When I started my hike, I looked up to see this massive mountain in front of me and wondered how it could be climbed in one day, let alone in 5 hours. I questioned how realistic I was being and how well my mind and body were going to cope. And I kept going. Moving forward. One foot in front of the other. Believing in myself. “Just keep moving, Tom. Just keep moving. You will be there soon enough. You can do this.” And 5 hours later, I reached the summit! The reward was beyond the spectacular views. It was knowing that my confidence and faith pulled me through, even when I didn’t know how it was going to happen. And despite any doubts that crept into my mind as I was climbing.
As I was climbing, I realized how similar it was to life and business. When we start a business, we may have HUGE amitions about it’s success, yet have no idea how we’re going to do it. It seems like such a daunting task. We’re embarking on an entirely new path and may feel so alone. We’re almost certainly questioning ourselves and our capabilities. Are we being realistic? But we’ve never done anything like this before, so can we really do it? How do we know that the business will succeed?
I only have one answer for these questions: there is only one way to find out. You must get started! Begin with the mentality of: READY. FIRE. AIM. You’re not going to have all the answers before you start your business and nor do you need to. If you had all the answers and knew every step, your journey would get boring pretty quickly. Nor would you have the ability to grow yourself and your confidence. You would miss out on the opportunity to trust yourself. Trust and confidence ONLY grow through experience. You have to get started and be in action for things to develop.
So many people get caught up in the business planning, research, are too busy, talking to people, ‘thinking’ about it, analyzing, etc., that they waste months and years…or never even get started. They find convenient excuses not to take the first step. It’s okay to be afraid. Welcome to the club called “Entrepreneurship”. But you do not need to get stuck in fear. Acknowledge the fear and keep moving forward.
Whether you’re thinking of starting a company, already started it, or have been in business for 10 years, I want you to ask yourself, “Where is an area that I can just get started in my business/project?”
You can get started in so many different ways. Register your web domain. Register your company with the state. Name your company. Can’t think of a name? Don’t worry about it. You can always do a “dba” when you find a name that feels right. Don’t know how to get your first client/customer? Just start sharing with everyone you meet what you’re doing. Take on a client for free or minimal fee (if it’s feasible). Feel indecisive or confused? Hire a coach. You get the point. And I know that you’re very aware of what you can do to simply get started in the direction you want to go. It’s simply a matter of doing it.
So get started. Know that doubts, frustrations, and cynics will cross your path. And then, you simply keep moving. Trust yourself.
I will leave you with this quote to keep in mind during those frustrating and fearful times:
Your imagination is your preview of life’s coming attractions. ~ Albert Einstein
As always: Be Bold. Be Audacious. And live your life on your own terms!
