Joran van der Sloot’s ex-girlfriend speaks out about him, Natalee Holloway, Stephany Flores (video)
Melody Granadillo, the ex-girlfriend of accused killer Joran van der Sloot, spoke to ‘20/20’ Friday night about their relationship and how he went from a hopeless romantic to a conniving, lying, young man.
Granadillo and van der Sloot were just teenagers when they met, but she tells Chris Cuomo the two spoke of marriage and one day having children.
Van der Sloot, 22, would write Granadillo love-filled notes and constantly profess his devotion to her. However, as their 7-month relationship progressed, she found the Dutch national had begun to lie to her and was seeing several other girls behind her back.
When she confronted him about his deception he said to her “Melody, a relationship is built on trust… you have to trust me.” Granadillo told Cuomo that this was when she began to see van der Sloot’s dark side.
Van der Sloot remains the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teen Nataliee Holloway, 18, who was last seen with the Dutchman leaving an Aruban night club. She has not been heard from since.
When news of Natalee’s disappearance hit local news, Granadillo said she took part in the search for her because she felt connected to the case through van der Sloot. Strangely, Granadillo noted, she and Natalee were born on the same day in the same year.
Although Granadillo initially believed van der Sloot’s story that he had left Natalee at her Aruban hotel, however, she eventually realized van der Sloot continued to change his story regarding the night Natalee vanished. Granadillo told Cuomo she believes van der Sloot caused harmed to Natalee and then panicked and covered up the crime.
Van der Sloot now sits behind bars in a Peruvian prison awaiting trial for the May 30 killing of Stephany Flores, 21, in a Lima hotel room.
Granadillo believes van der Sloot’s gambling addiction, combined with what happened to Natalee consumed him and led to Stephany’s death.
Granadillo continued to stay in contact with van der Sloot over the years and recently received a text from Peru asking her for money for a ticket home. She refused to send van der Sloot the money thinking he would likely use it on gambling. Now Granadillo thinks if she’d complied, Stephany may be alive today, since van der Sloot met her the very same day he sent Granadillo the text.
Ironically, when Granadillo saw photos of Stephany, she told Cuomo the slain woman “…looks a bit like me.”
