It was down to the Top 3 this week as Crystal Bowersox, Lee Dewyze and Casey James pulled out all stops in their quest to make it to the American Idol finale. Or rather…it should have been a case of everyone pulling out all the stops–but the competition this week mostly plodded along in the same vein as it has the entire season–with no one really doing anything memorable, risky or original–except for Lee.
Thank goodness America got it right, as far as who should go to the finale–of the Top 3 remaining hopefuls, Crystal and Lee were definitely the two who should be moving on. And we finally bid goodbye to Kara’s Boy Toy Casey James.
I wouldn’t have been surprised if Casey slid on through to the finale, but I definitely thought it was time for him to go home…it’s been long overdue, but looks and popularity can carry someone a long way, as we’ve seen here along Casey’s journey.
I don’t know why the contestants have seemed so lackluster this season–even with some solid vocal talent like Crystal, Aaron, Big Mike and even Siobhan, it seems like everyone has been missing the ooomph, the personality, and excitement of previous seasons.
Although I have to admit, Lee finally stepped up and did have his “moment” this week with his rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”. Other contestants have done this song sooo many times, but Lee really did put a different spin on it. You could see he put his heart and soul into it, and the arrangement and his vocals were spot on–I only wish we’d seen this kind of performance weeks ago from him–and from other contestants. (I recently watched Jon Bon Jovi perform this song live, and didn’t think anyone else could come close–but I have to admit, Lee did a phenomenal job.) Lee also did a fine job with “Simple Man”, though it wasn’t as good a song choice as “Hallelujah”–so hats off to Simon for giving Lee the right vehicle to possibly pass the checkered flag with.
Lee’s confidence level finally hit the mark this week, and right in the nick of time. I have a feeling the “dark horse” might actually take the Idol title.
Crystal also did an excellent job with Ellen’s song choice for her, “Maybe I’m Amazed” by Paul McCartney. As the judges mentioned, we finally got to see a different side of Crystal, and her voice sounded beautiful. I, like Simon, wasn’t sure that the song choice was really going to work for her, but she nailed it.
Unlike the past few seasons where the Davids (Archuleta vs. Cook) competed, and then last year’s Boy-Next-Door Kris Allen vs. the Glamalicious Mr. Lambert, we have boy vs. girl, which we haven’t seen for quite some time.
So…here’s hoping Lee and Crystal will bring it on next week and give us a finale worthy of the confetti and champagne.
Who are you rooting for?
Tune in to FOX next Tuesday as the Top 2 go head to head for the title.
