California State Sacramento offers free brief counseling, psychiatric and psychological services to enrolled undergraduate and graduate students. The Psychological Counseling Services assists students in dealing with stress and other life issues that may be affecting their academic life. The staff is composed of one psychiatrist, several psychologists, one licensed clinical social worker and doctoral student interns.
Susan Ko, a staff Clinical Psychologist at Sacramento State has been providing counseling services to students for the past eight years. Dr. Ko has a Doctorate Degree from UC Santa Barbara in Counseling – Clinical Psychology. She specializes in cross cultural counseling, Asian mental health, women issues and training and development problems.
On average Dr. Ko treats five to seven patients per week. The length of time students can receive services through the Psychological Counseling Services is six to eight weeks with the majority of students being seen on a bi-monthly basis. However, any student in crisis will not be turned away for services.
Dr. Ko reported the majority of students seek help for depression, anxiety and relationship and life issues such as work, school and other life stressors. Dr. Ko stated most students seek help during the October, November, March and April months. She related this surge to the stresses of college life, midterms and building anxiety regarding adjustment and schedule demands.
In addition to individual counseling services, the Psychological Counseling Services also offers group counseling. Anxiety, body image, stress reduction and grief/loss groups are a few options students can choose from. The groups change every semester and are only offered based on demand and popularity. If you are interested in participating in group sessions, please contact the office regarding the current group counseling offerings.
The Psychological Counseling Services has an on-site staff psychiatrist for students who are need of medication management for their psychological problems. The psychiatrist works in partnership with the student’s current therapist to create the most effective treatment plan for the student’s presenting problems.
