Many of Home and Living Readers know Tracy Hutson from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. But did you know Tracy has a line of wonderful home products and accessories on QVC? She is here to share news and we roll out the welcome mat for this terrific designer and lady.
Q.: Tracy, so nice to meet you here at Home and Living. For Readers who don’t know you, who is Tracy Hutson?
A.: Likewise! For the readers who don’t know me, I would start off by saying I am the mother of two beautiful boys, someone who is passionate about design, and has been fortunate enough to have a career doing what I love. I have been a part of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition since the beginning. We are now going into our 8th season of building homes for families in need.
Q.: You have a home product and accessories line for QVC, how is that going?
A.: What an honor to be recognized and brought into the QVC family. The process of getting the collections ready for the customer to see is an amazing journey. I have had the chance to showcase a handful of my products and the response has been fantastic. I go back on air for “Makeover Day” on May 20th.
When I design, I look to nature for my inspiration and find unexpected color…
Q.: There is quite a nice tag line to introduce your products, will you share?
A.: If you are referring to this quote from QVC.com, this is the philosophy that I live by:
“As a designer, I have trained my eye to find the perfect mix of accessories. I look for unique as well as classic, timeless pieces that will give your home warmth and personality. When I design, I look to nature for my inspiration and find unexpected color in the green moss on a rock; the clear, turquoise ocean water; or a warm, vibrant sunset. Shape and size are just as important as color, and I’m still inspired by organic shapes. What I love about this collection is the balance of feminine and masculine, vintage and modern.” – Tracy Hutson
Q.: Have you always wanted your own line of home products? And tell us what goes into your goods from inspiration to fruition please.
A.: Oh yes! I have always dreamt of having a line of home goods. I have been collecting tidbits of inspiration since before I can remember. My ideas come from anything that catches my eye: beautiful fabrics, artwork, and ceramic pieces. Visiting flea markets and antique stores is one of my favorite past times. I enjoy putting a contemporary spin on old design and bringing these ideas to QVC. From here we have a starting point, then the wheels start turning…choosing the right color palette, fabrics, approving samples, and the collection just starts to come together.
Q.: Two-part question here: what is your favorite product and are you getting feedback from QVC customers? By the way, I love, love the leather stacking storage boxes—so nice and the different patterned interiors makes for a nice touch.
A.: My favorite? It would probably be a tossup between the nesting trays and the zig zag throw. Both of these products are so visually appealing and versatile and are getting a lot of praise. This is wonderful news! I really enjoy hearing the customer’s feedback and how they are being used in the home.
Q.: You have some new products coming up for the Love Where You Live line, what can we expect?
A.: Yes, there are many new products coming into the line. The summer collection is all about outdoor entertaining. The Lemonade decanter and Mason jar glasses are the focal point. The line also includes beautifully detailed decorative pillows and scalloped ceramic pots that I absolutely love. I have already have some filled with fresh herbs and lavender. There will also be a new table lamp. We are already gearing up for our Fall line with linens and a silver leafed chest that I adore!
Q.: Has your experience with ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition played into your selections for homeowner products?
A.: My experience on the show has given me the opportunity to finely train my decorative skills. Designing a house in a week sounds impossible! I really just have to find a starting point and go from there, which is exactly how I approach designing my line at QVC.
Q.: Customers will find your home goods on QVC but and do you have a separate website or blog with more information?
A.: Follow me on Twitter
Q.: How do you possibly juggle it all; would you like to mention your book?
A.: This question makes me giggle. It does seem like a full plate, but my boys are at the top of my list and are my true inspirations. This makes everything else just fall into place. I’m a little sleep deprived, but it’s well worth it! Writing my book Feathering the Nest: Tracy Hutson’s Earth-Friendly Guide to Decorating Your Baby’s Room was something I had to do. It seemed that so many of my friends and clients were having babies all at once, myself included, and everyone was looking for advice. Now I can check that off my Bucket List!
Q.: Is there anything else you would like to tell Home and Living Readers?
A.: Feeling comfortable in your home is powerful. I truly believe that your home should be your sanctuary. I also believe that this does not have to cost a lot of money. Take the time to create collections of your favorite items—it can even be your favorite high heels or books! Celebrating your favorite items showcases who you are and shows off your own style.
