If you have a dog with a history of throat problems, like a collapsing trachea, you may not want to have a collar around his neck. At this point, for your dog’s safety you may want to get a harness for him. But how do you know which one is best for your pooch?
This is the most common harness. It slides over the head and then gets secured behind the front legs. The leash then attaches to the back of the harness. These harnesses come in almost any color and pattern, sometimes even with a matching leash available. However, if you have a dog that is not trained to walk on a leash properly, you may find your dog acting more unruly on this harness. This type of harness actually distributes pressure across the dog’s chest, where he is most powerful, and makes it more difficult to control him in general.
This harness is great for dogs with joint problems. Instead of sliding the harness over your dog’s head, this harness lays flat on the ground with two openings for the dog’s legs. You then get the dog to place his feet in the openings and slip the harness up to the dog’s chest area, where it will close at the top of the dog’s back. These harnesses generally have two leash attachments next to the closure and both attachments should be used at all times. These harnesses can come undone if there is too much pressure on only one side of the closure.
There has been some debate as to whether or not these harnesses work. They are designed to make pulling on a leash very uncomfortable for a dog, generally by having padded cords go under the dog’s front legs. However, some dogs do not seem to react to the harness correctly. This could be because the harness is not adjusted right or is wrong size. For this harness to be the most effective, though, you do need to work with your dog on a training regime to get the pulling under control.
This type of harness is designed to prevent the dog from jumping on anything, whether it is a person, furniture, or into the car. It works by preventing the natural stretching of the spine and legs when a dog jumps. There are generally two loops for the rear legs and a loop that goes around the neck of the dog. These loops are attached to each other with a line running under the dog’s belly. When put on correctly, this type of harness will allow the dog to walk normally. However, dogs wearing this harness are not able to run, so caution must be used in open areas and around other dogs. Once again, the most effective way to use this harness is in conjunction with a training program to get the jumping under control.
Front attachment harnesses are designed to prevent the dog from pulling while on leash. The leash, instead of attaching on the dog’s back, gets clipped to the harness on the front chest area. When the dog pulls, he turns himself around. This action, particularly when paired with the appropriate training program, teaches the dog that pulling is not going to be an effective way to get where he wants to go.
Harnesses can be found almost anywhere in Greensboro where pet supplies are sold, though some types are only available at certain stores. Once again, if you are having an issue with your dog, you want to talk to your vet and a trainer or behaviorist for advice. Without proper instruction, some issues can actually become worse when you are trying to correct them.
