Green Planet Grocery put out the green and yellow balloons and turned on their neon “Open” signs. The latest natural foods store in central New York opened its front doors after an all-night marathon of setup, shelf labeling and placing last minute touches. On Saturday, June 19, Owen Lewis described the store’s first day as his “soft opening.” the first step in bringing a full-service natural foods store to the public in Syracuse’s western suburbs.
The juice bar isn’t quite ready yet, and some of the items on the shelves still need signs. But the cash registers are working and the shelves are stocked with natural, organic and in some cases, locally sourced products. Grindstone Farms red and green kale from Pulaski, NY filled the produce displays along with organic potatoes from a grower in Portland, OR. The coffee aisle features five bagged bean roasts from popular Syracuse coffee roastery Recess Coffee, along with several other organic roasts in bagged beans and grind-your-own dispensers.
Flour City Pasta, Fairport, NY’s own artisanal pasta, has a prominent display in the pasta aisle, along with other gluten-free and organic pasta brands. During Green Planet’s opening, Flour City is available at 10% off its regular price. According to Small Potatoes Sales & Marketing owner Marty Butts, who was also on hand in the store on opening day, Green Planet is Flour City Pasta’s first storefront retail outlet in central New York.
A first look at Green Planet’s aisles on Saturday afternoon turned up a full-featured store that offered products for nearly every item on a grocery list. In addition to fresh seasonal local produce and fair-trade produce from out of the area, Green Planet features fresh bread, a stocked dairy case and organic frozen foods including meat, fish, vegetables, fruit and prepackaged meals. Staples including meals, flours and beans in bulk dispensers, a full line of Frontier herbs and spices and packaged organic canned and dry goods round out the pantry aisles.
The store also stocks organic snack foods, vitamins, supplements, organic cat and dog foods and green-living cleaning and household products. The check-out counters, stocked in a regular grocery store with single-serve treats, are no different at Green Planet – except that the single-serve treats are organic, or gluten-free. For those who forgot them, Green Planet also offers its own reusable shopping bags – in bright, earth-friendly green.
Store hours are Monday through Saturday, 8am to 10pm, and Sunday from 10am to 8pm. That schedule should position the store to serve day residents in Solvay, Fairmount, Camillus, Jordan, Elbridge, Marcellus and other villages and towns west of Syracuse. The store will also be open and right on the way home for resident-commuters at the end of their business day when they exit Rt.690/695 in Fairmount.
Green Planet Grocery is at 3514 West Genesee St., Syracuse, NY, across from Fairmount Fair. The store has parking in front, and 40 spaces in the back, and is about one mile from the Rt. 695 Fairmount exit.
