Great boxing action this weekend, including the return of Cleveland’s own Shawn ‘Showtime’ Porter. Porter will headline a card in Tunica, Mississippi that can be seen for free on Gofightlive.tv. Elsewhere, Friday night in Youngstown, the best amateurs from Northeast Ohio will compete in the final round of the U.S. Championships and Junior Olympic qualifying tournament. Winners from the tournament move a step closer at making the Junior Olympic and Olympic boxing teams.
Nationally this weekend, ESPN2 has a full card of fights for Friday night. No elite prospects are on the broadcast, however the two bouts scheduled should be solid, high-action fights. On Saturday night, Showtime will broadcast one of the best and most brutal rivalries in boxing history as Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez meet for the fourth time. In the undercard, which may even be a better fight, Yonnhy Perez defends his IBF bantamweight title against Abner Mares. Also this weekend, Gofightlive.tv will broadcast three events. Be sure to catch all the action this weekend.
Friday, May 21 on ESPN2
Ji Hoon Kim (20-5) vs. Ameth Diaz (27-9)
Ruslan Provodnikov (15-0) vs. Emanuel Augustus (38-31-6)
Kim is a solid lightweight prospect, still only being 23, and has won twelve bouts in a row; his last ten by knockout. Kim is a big hitter. Ameth Diaz, also a big hitter, is coming off back to back wins previously. The bout is an IBF title eliminator, however the belt is currently vacant.
Emanuel Augustus is a very late replacement for Francisco Figueroa. Augustus is well past his prime, but will provide some good action. He loves to mix it up against his opponent. Ruslan Provodnikov is a 26 year old welterweight prospect from Russia. He has 10 knockouts in his 15 bouts.
Saturday, May 22 on Showtime
Israel Vazquez (44-4) vs. Rafael Marquez (38-5)Yonnhy Perez (20-0), the #4 bantamweight vs. Abner Mares (20-0), the #8 bantamweight. For Perez’s IBF bantamweight title.
Vazquez-Marquez will meet for the fourth time in one of boxing’s best rivalries. Their first three bouts, Vazquez won the first and Marquez the last two, have been one of the greatest and most vicious trilogies in boxing history. The two featherweights are toward the end of the line and have each fought only once over the past two years, however they will lay it all on the line Saturday.
Yonnhy Perez is coming off a fantastic performance against Joseph Abeko last Halloween. Perez is a dynamic puncher that is never shy about throwing punches. Mares is a young fighter making his first big step up in class. Mares is a very skilled boxer that does about everything well. He will need to bring a good offensive attack to defeat Perez.
Saturday, May 22 on Gofightlive.tv (FREE)
Shawn Porter (14-0) vs. Bobby Kliewer (10-10-2)
Dominic Wade (6-0) vs. Mustafah Johnson (8-6-1)
Three other bouts to appear on broadcast
Cleveland’s Shawn Porter returns just five weeks after knocking out Raul Pinzon in the first round on ‘ShoBox’. Wade is another middleweight prospect, similar to Porter. Each of their opponents are no real threat.
Saturday, May 22 on Gofightlive.tv ($9.99)
Teon Kennedy (14-0-1) vs. Jose Angel Beranza (32-17-2)
Patrick Majewski (12-0) vs. Loren Myers (7-7-1)
Five other bouts to appear on broadcast
Kennedy is a good American super bantamweight prospect who’s last opponent died from brain injuries suffered in their fight. It will be interesting to see how the young fighter comes back from such a tragic situation. Majewski is a 30 year old middleweight “prospect” from Poland.
Saturday, May 22 on Gofightlive.tv ($TBD)
Travis Kaufman (19-1) vs. Chris Koval (24-6)
Five other bouts to appear on broadcast
Kaufman is a decent American heavyweight who is still trying to make everyone forget he was knocked out by Tony Grano. Koval is from Youngstown and has decent power to test Kaufman with.
Saturday, May 22 – NO TV
Vitali Tajbert (19-1), the #10 junior lightweight vs. Hector Velazquez (51-14-2). For Tajbert’s WBC junior lightweight title.
Ruslan Chagaev (25-1-1), the #4 heavyweight vs. Kali Meehan (35-3)
Chagaev-Meehan is a WBA heavyweight title eliminator. David Haye is the current WBA champion. Chagaev is a good, but not great heavyweight. He was destroyed by Wladmir Klitschko is his previous bout last June. Meehan is 40, but decent. Chagaev should have little problem.
Tajbert-Velazquez could be a good action fight. However, Tajbert should have an easy time and retain his title.
