For quite a few years now, FBI, better known as Flinttown Ballers INC., has been preaching the musical gospel of a metal subgenre known as ‘punk-hop’. You can catch FBI live onstage at different venues around the Flint area such as Churchill’s, the Corunna Road Bar, and the annual Park & Pork Fest at Kearsley Park. The head honcho of the group is a mysterious character who always wears a mask onstage and goes by the moniker “Ace No Face”, presumably not his given name.
Q: So tell me, how did FBI get started?
Ace: Well, we got started off in a very funny and unique way. It was at a open mic night at the Ragtop Lounge about 5-6 years ago.
Q: What was funny about it?
Ace: Well I got up to do vocals on a song that the drummer (MC Flintrock) and guitarist (El El Koolaid) had previously written. However I was freestyling to it for a very long time and with no hook or chorus, just me rapping for a bunch of verses with no breaks. Then I recieved a short lived nickname of ‘Half Hour Freestyle’. At one point in the song El El started making a chorus by comically saying, ” This song ain’t got no hook!”
Q: That is funny! How would you describe the band’s music? Is it hip-hop?
Ace: Not really, it is what we have come to call “punk-hop”.
Q: I think I get it…but please explain.
Ace: Well, we took the styles of some of the groups and bands we really liked and molded them into our own sound. It’s as if you took Nirvana & Rage Against The Machine, and put them in a blender with Beastie Boys & Run D.M.C. and a couple of others.
Q: Sounds cool. So what’s your band’s deal with Halloween?
Ace: We love Halloween! We actually participate every year in Free Will’s Halloween Bash. Its always a great time, and all of our friends who perform, or just come to enjoy our antics, love what is put together on that night!
Q: Any news of a CD?
Ace: Well, we are in the process of recording at the moment. We do want our fans to be able to have a CD of us. We just want to make sure that it’s not your run of the mill album. Or a one hit type album. We want it to be where our fans love every song on it, so we are taking our time to make it special for them.
Q: What are some of your favorite local bands?
Ace: Well first there is us! Just kidding! Honestly, I would have to say Free Will, The Round, Publik Parking. However, we do like and support all of the local musicians in the Flint and surrounding areas.
Q: Cool, cool. And you’re a movie buff, eh?
Ace: I would like to think I am. According to my brother I will watch anything! Other than that, I would say that I am a movie buff.
Q: What’s your favorite movie?
Ace: Well, my favorite film so far is a movie that was shown on The Masters Of Horror series called “Family”.
Q: The one directed by John Landis?
Ace: Yup, that’s the one. It has the right amount of horror mixed with a little bit of comedy. Showing the genius of Mr. Landis.
Q: Why do you wear a mask onstage?
Ace: Well, the reason for the mask is it adds to the stage name of Ace No Face. It adds some sense to the stage name, as well as some shock value for the crowd. It’s also fun ’cause I can pick ones that express my character. Some look funny, some look ridiculous, and others are just like, “What”?! So its my way to add a little more fun to the shows.
Q: Thanks for your time, Ace.
Ace: No problem.
FBI’s self-titled debut CD is due out sometime in early autumn 2010.
