I know this column is dedicated to working Moms but I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge that this weekend is Father’s Day weekend. And while some working Moms may not need to worry about Father’s Day plans, the suggestions I have for this weekend can be fun for all families!
If your hubby is like mine, he would like to take this Sunday and watch the Eureka marathon on the SyFy Channel. That means that the living room should be his domain for the day, or at least until 7:00 when the last episode ends, and the kids need something to do.
Of course the biggest news for this weekend, besides Father’s Day, is Toy Story 3. Woody, Buzz and the whole gang are back this weekend and will no doubt entertain the entire family. Maybe you want to take the kids yourself and leave Dad at home for his quiet time. Or if Dad wants to see it too, let him come along and join in the popcorn and fun. With temperatures in the 90’s for the weekend a movie theater may be just the place you want to be to cool off. For a listing of movie theaters in the Raleigh area, go to this website: http://raleigh.mrmovietimes.com. Karate Kid is still out as well if you want to make it a double feature. Just be careful with younger kids since Karate Kid might be a little too old for kids under 10 since it is a little violent.
If a movie is not in the cards, why not a day trip to the beach? Wrightsville Beach is only a two hour drive and easy to get to. The kids can play in the sand, look for sea creatures, or just jump the waves. Not only will the drive increase family time and allow for more conversation, the beach won’t be as crowded as July 4th weekend. The water isn’t too cold right now either. Pack up the sunscreen, towels, shovels and pails and off you go!
There are also lots of pools in Raleigh where you can cool off if you don’t have one where you live. Pack sandwiches and snacks and make a day of it. Your kids will enjoy playing in the pool and you can either play with them or sit back and relax. Once you get home from the pool your kids should sleep pretty well that night from all that exercise and sun. Just remember the sunscreen and drinks! If Dad does decide that he wants to come along instead of sitting on the couch all day, pass him the popcorn, bury him in the sand or lather him in sunscreen for the pool. Then sit back and watch as he shows you why your kids think he’s the best Dad in the world. It happens every day anyway; every time your kids get that goofy grin because Dad’s playing tickle monster or that big smile when he walks in the door from work. And for all that he does, he is your kids Best Dad Ever. Rightfully so.
