It never fails. Pete Avendano and the Harana Men’s Chorus make me always fall in love every time I hear them sing and perform. I got my own ‘wow’ moment watching the Philippine Independence Weekend concert ‘Extraordinary Voices’ last Sunday at the Celebrity Centre International in Hollywood Ca. And just like their previous shows, they transported everyone back to memories of Manila and revisit Filipino culture through music and fashion.
Let me tell you why the show is extraordinary. The concept of fashion and music was a good combination that enthralled music lovers and fashionistas. The various and entertaining selection of songs were creatively interspersed with interpretations of Philippine costume by aspiring designers as presented in a Filipiniana Fashion Competition. Overall, it was a good way to remember that we have great OPM music and artists and upcoming fashion czars.
Tenor Pete Avendaño and soprano Joan Cano did an awesome rendition of a Ryan Cayabyab classic ‘Paraiso’. Joining Pete and Joan were excellent musicians and guest artists guitarist Ric Ickard, famous for his internationally-released album of Philippine melodies, who did a very relaxing guitar version of “Babalik ka Rin”; Pinoy Pop Grand Champion USA and Ms. Philippines-USA Sheila Ferrari who candidly shared hosting duties with the multi talented vocalist and renown vocal coach Annie Nepomuceno; the Harana Men’s Chorus who made a very lively and fun rendition of “Punong Saging / O Ilaw” , Paul Concepcion on the grand piano and guest musician Ed Nepomuceno. The show also featured most loved Karaoke songs such as ‘Sana’y Wala ng Wakas’, ‘Ngayon at Kailanman’, ‘Pangako sa ‘yo’, and ‘Naaalala Ka’.
Fashion designers Jay Perez, Michael Pinpin, Ralph Prado and Kristine Amarillo showcased opulent, colorful and enchanting collections of Filipiniana dresses. Each designer’s masterpiece speaks of passion, style and imagination of Filipiniana. Winners Ralph Prado and Kristine Amarillo of FIDM designed stunning silhouettes with a modern edge radiating elegance and timeless allure.
