The very creative actor, producer, director, and writer Gregori J. Martin headed west to California five years ago, but he’s originally from New York. ‘I’m a New Yorker and a very proud one,’ Martin told examiner in a recent interview. ‘I miss the culture, I miss my family, and I miss the people. There’s a lot of culture there and a family essence,’ he continued.
Martin started his career as an actor, then went on to write professionally. You may remember him from an acting role on ABC’s ‘General Hospital.’ ‘I played a police officer for about a year. It was a recurring thing – anytime they needed a cop they would call me…. I wasn’t a core character,’ Martin told examiner.
So professionally speaking, where is Martin’s heart? ‘The directing is by far, my strongest passion…. I don’t look at myself as an actor…. I much prefer to be directing or writing,’ Martin shared.
Does Martin have a favorite project or one he’s particularly proud of? ‘My success came with my films…. I hold the record of the most films directed by someone my age,’ Martin shared. ‘The Intruders’ is probably dearest to me…. Anytime I write something and it comes to life, that’s always great. ‘Manhattanites’ is the only film I’ve directed in New York, so it has a very special place in my heart…. I’m really, really proud of it. My latest film, ‘Sebastian,’ is probably my best work…. It has an amazing cast,’ Martin told examiner.
Martin’s exciting new project will be up and running this fall. ‘The Bay’ is an Internet soap opera created by Martin. Numerous daytime stars, including Tristan Rogers, Lilly Melgar, Mary Beth Evans, Ilene Kristen, Martha Madison, Dylan Bruce, Real Andrews, and John Callahan will be featured on the soap.
‘The Bay’ has an interesting history – Martin began creating it when he was very young. ‘When I was a kid, my family … would watch all of these soaps … I would sit and watch with them and become addicted with them. I started to create my own characters in my head …. I would write scripts … and breakdowns for these characters. So it’s been over 20 years that these characters (from ‘The Bay’) have been in my head,’ Martin shared. ‘As a kid I used to draw a lot – I would draw these characters and I would make little books and my mother would save them,’ he continued.
Examiner was curious as to what age group Martin is targeting for ‘The Bay.’ ‘I wouldn’t say there’s any particualr age that we’re targeting. I’d like to attract a younger audience but I’m happy with anyone who’s interested in watching,’ Martin said about ‘The Bay’s’ future viewers.
So what exactly is the premise of ‘The Bay?’ ‘It takes place in the Bay area … there’s no specifics of where it is …. We’re trying to stay as generic as possible for now …. It follows the life of Sara Garrett (Mary Beth Evans) and the people around her,’ Martin said.
