Two seasoned professional football players bring their knowledge and experience to the youth of North Texas on June 26th and June 27th. Anthony Dorsett, Jr., an NFL Veteran defensive back with two Super Bowl appearances and son of legendary Tony Dorsett, is hosting his second annual Dorsett 33 Football Camp series. This year, Dorsett 33 teams up with Jason Shelley, former wide receiver for the Dallas Desperados and Columbus Destroyers. The two pros want to prepare the athletes for upcoming fall football season with these key optional camps. “These are truly impressionable years,” says Shelley, “If we can teach them good habits and good instruction, it will definitely help them out.”
Ironically, as coaches, Dorsett and Shelley squared off against each other in the Frisco Football League 10-year-old division last fall. One thing the two agree on, however, centers on equipping the youth with better techniques, “We see how much these kids are lacking in skill which we took for granted growing up. They need instruction at an early age and so we are trying to help,” says Dorsett who played for the Tennessee Titans and Oakland Raiders.
The camps are divided by age group. The morning session on both days runs from 8:00 – 11:00am. It is designed for 7 to 9 year olds. The afternoon sessions run from 1:00 – 4:00pm and stress more advanced fundamentals for 10 to 12 year olds. No football experience is necessary and the camps are open to both boys and girls who want to focus on the offensive and defensive skill positions. “We are here to get better,” said veteran camper Skylar Sowerwine. “I learned a lot of stuff I did not know before like the route tree, the receiver stance, and the fake out when someone is playing the press and how to get off and get out of that. This will make a difference this season.”
Dorsett and Shelley will be joined by current and former NFL/UFL football players for the non-contact camp sponsored by Nike and Zoom Sports Performance. Athletes are asked to wear workout clothes and bring cleats. An official camp t-shirt will be given to each registered athlete to wear during the camp.
