The District 67 Little League junior Tournament of Champions is beginning to wrap up after two winner bracket games held earlier today.
The first game saw the Tracy Giants playing against the Northgate Reds. Both teams appeared ready to play from the opening pitch with both starting pitchers dominating early on. With both starters throwing so well the game had an accelerated pace for the first few innings. The Giants broke through first with a run in the third but the Reds answered right back with a run of their own to tie the game up.
The game stayed tied until the sixth inning until the Giants strung together a few hits chasing the Reds starting pitcher as he reached his maximum of 95 pitches allowed by Little League rules. The scoring started with the third baseman for the Giants hitting an opposite field inside the park home run to right field. The Giants starting pitcher hit his maximum while completing his fifth inning of work.
The game was very intense with both teams trying to remain in the coveted winners bracket.
Things got a little bit dicey in the top of the sixth inning after a collision at first base between a Giants hitter and the Reds first baseman. Words were exchanged between the two teams while the umpires conferred with each other to determine if the runner was out or safe. The initial call was out but it was over turned and the over turned again leading to major confusion and frustration amongst the players on the field. The final call was made and the runner was officially out.
This game wasn’t going to end easily with the Reds mounting a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. They managed to get a few runners on and one scored to make the score 4-2 Giants. Their rally came up short with one final strikeout sending the Giants to the championship game on 6/23.
The later game was for the other slot in the winners bracket championship game. The Salida Rockies were up against the Northgate Yankees. The Rockies hit first and brought their bats to the game. The scored five times in the first frame to take an early lead. The Yankees responded with three runs of their own to get right back into the game after the first inning.
Both teams played hard and were fighting the elements as the wind started to pickup and drive the dust from the infield everywhere.
Even with starting in the hole after the first inning the Yankees fought back and managed to secure a hard fought 12-10 victory.
The winners bracket championship game will be held at Paul Weston park in Weston Ranch on 6/23. The start time for the game is 5:00 PM. It should be a very competitive game between two strong teams.
