This past April the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) held UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi, UAE where the main event turned into a sad spectacle no thanks to UFC middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva. UFC president Dana White is ready to make good on his promise to make it up to the fans who bought the pay-per-view event.
The main event at UFC 112 saw Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Demian Maia step inside the Octagon to attempt to dethrone the champion, Anderson Silva. What transpired had fans, media and the UFC president himself outraged. Dana was so angry at what was happening inside the cage he actually left cageside in the fourth round and told Silva’s manager he could put the belt around Anderson’s waist because he refused to do it.
Anderson Silva spent most of the first three rounds mocking Demian Maia dancing around and even going so far as to get on his knees in front of him and bow in a mocking manner. Fans at the event booed the champion and his actions. Then the in the final two rounds he refused to engage the challenger and decided to do what amounted to running from him inside the Octagon.
All of this led Dana White to apologize to the fans and promise that he would make it up to then.
“This was an historic night for us. The arena tonight was incredible. The energy was amazing. And to end it the way that we did was an embarrassment for me, the Fertittas, the UFC, and the sport in general, so I apologize,” White said. “And I will, I don’t know how yet, but I will make this up to the fans that bought this (expletive) tonight.”
The promise he made is on the verge of coming true. MMA Weekly quoted Mr. White when asked what he has planned to make it up to the consumers.
What I’m going to end up doing is probably taking a big, huge fight that should have been on pay-per-view and put it on free TV. I’m actually working on it right now,” said the UFC president.
“I said I’d make up for that, and trust me, I’m gonna.”
This is sure to make the fans happy and help them to forget the debacle that was UFC 112 if it truly is a fight as big as Dana tells us.
Looking at the fight upcoming fight landscape we know heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will defend his title against Shane Carwin at UFC 116 which eliminates a heavyweight title bout for the free show. Also out of the running will be welterweight champion Georges St Pierre as he is set to face Josh Koscheck about 5 months from now. Currently they are working as coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter” season 12 which is taping as of this article.
We could see UFC 117 end up being the free card as a gift to the fans and as punishment to Anderson Silva. The event is set to take place in Oakland, California and the main event features Anderson Silva defending his title again but this time against brash Chael Sonnen.
