- Does Dad have one of these somewhere in the family room? You might want to consider coaxing him into a new favorite chair.
The well- worn avocado green recliner from Frasier is a testament to the way we all get attached to a comfortable lounge chair. Once we find it, we don’t want to let it go…ever !
Finding a perfect chair is like fitting a person for a new pair of pants. That is, it must match the person to a ‘t’. If you have a longer thigh you will need to consider a seat depth accordingly. If your knees hang more than an inch over the edge of the seat, it is too short and will put a strain on the lower back. Likewise, the seat needs to be the right height. If it is too low, getting out of the chair will be difficult. We all know when we achieve the perfect fit.
Here are some wonderful designer chair alternatives to show how much you care. The Artist chair by Ralph Lauren is has a magnificent high back and deep seat for taller men. Hickory Chair makes a wonderful classic tufted piece called the Rawlings Chair, and it is also available as a swivel. If Dad is not a big guy, he will really love the Lowell Chair which has a high pillow back, and comfortable arm height for reading. If Dad is more of an average size guy, he will enjoy the cushy back cushion and comfortable slope of the Lowell Chair, also from Hickory Chair.
If Dad likes sleek and contemporary, the classic Eames Chair ,a 1956 design in molded rosewood and leather by design innovators Charles and Ray Eames is produced by Hermann Miller. It is widely cherished for its comfort and style. It has long been included in museum collections throughout the world. This is the ultimate in modern lounge chairs, and looks good everywhere. Unexpected comfort and exquisite line are the key features of the 1958 Andre Arbus Paqueboat Chair and Ottoman re produced this spring by Baker furniture. Arbus was a third generation French cabinetmaker who produced elegant, modern neo- classically inspired furniture in the 1930’s and 40’s. Both Eames’ and Arbus had a profound influence on modern design and will receive a column of their own by this Examiner.
If you already know Dad insists on a recliner, don’t worry. Todays’ designs come in many different styles. The well known Barcalounger brand has organized their catalogue to group small, medium and larger sizes together. This mid- priced company offers value and style selection, too. Some of the most popular are included in our slide show.
