This article is part of a series, Cleansing and Clearing for Higher Consciousness, in which we explore seven main chakras, five major elimination systems of the physical body and natural methods to encourage energy clearing and physical cleansing (waste elimination) for a stronger connection to divinity and higher consciousness.
The bowel is made up of the small intestine, the large intestine and the rectum. Its function is to help the body absorb fluids and nutrients from the foods we eat, and then to expel the waste. The small intestine absorbs nutrients from what we eat and drink. The waste is delivered from the small intestine to the large intestine or colon. The colon is located on the left side of the bowel and it moves stool through to the rectum with muscular contractions called peristaltic waves. During peristalsis, fluids are removed and absorbed into the body. When the peristaltic wave reached the rectum, we feel the urge to defecate. Feces are pushed out of the anal canal by the sphincter muscles and when the bowel movement is complete, the rectum relaxes until the next peristaltic wave.
The colon is associated primarily with the solar plexus and, to a lesser degree, the sacral chakra. Just as the colon digests food, the solar plexus chakra can be said to be the center where negative emotions are processed. When the solar plexus chakra is not functioning properly we may show signs of mental bullying or aggression or we may be aloof, angry, fearful, worrisome and dogmatic. Unwillingness or the inability to accept others’ opinions and beliefs. The ability to manifest will be impaired by a blocked solar plexus chakra and there is a tendency to hold onto resentment. A blocked solar plexus chakra may be physically manifested as digestion problems, colon cancer, diarrhea, constipation and stomach problems.
To stimulate bowel functions, take a deep breath and allow the air to pass through your body, forcing your lower abdomen to expand. While holding your breath, rotate the trunk of your body in large circles using your lower abdomen as your center of gravity. Rotate nine times then exhale through your mouth. Force all of the air from your abdomen. Repeat this exercise three times. Tapping the bowel gently from left to right will also stimulate bowel functions. Try one of the following to relieve constipation or sluggish bowels:
- soak 2 tbls flax seeds in 8 ozs water overnight and drink the next morning
- eat 5 New Body alfalfa vegi-caps with each meal
- eat 1/2 cup white or black bean soup with 1 meal daily
- eat 1/4 cup applesauce made with unpeeled, unsweetened apples
- eat cole slaw or sprout salads daily with 1 tbls of grated, raw beet root
- increase water intake
