Since the announcement of the second game I’ve already been formulating in my head what I want from this game. The original inFamous was an amazing game, but not without its flaws. Let’s dive into what Sucker Punch should bring to the table for its sequel.
Better In-game Cutscenes
One of my biggest problems with the first game was the terrible cutscenes that weren’t the done in the style of a comic book. The in-game cutscenes were awful. The animations were really stiff and rather ugly. From what I’ve seen, there will be in-game cutscenes in inFamous 2 but they’ll be pre-rendered. That’s what I saw from the screenshots at least. As long as they look fluid and not cartoony, I think it’ll be ok.
A New (and Better) Love Interest
I’ll be honest with you; I can’t even remember the name of Cole’s girlfriend (I wanna say Amy…?). Despite the fact that she played an important role in the end, she was hardly a presence in the game. Unlike Zeke, who accompanied Cole on missions and was a steady presence throughout the entire game, Cole’s girlfriend was only in the game here and there.
I’m hoping for someone who ties into the plot more, or is at least physically present so I might remember her name once I finish the game.
An Amazing Villain
This isn’t to say that the villain from the first game wasn’t great. He was, especially when you saw the twist at the very end of the game. I just want someone even better than him.
Now we know of Bertrand already, as well as the Beast. I wonder if Bertrand is the story’s ultimate villain (as in, he’s the main source of conflict for Cole throughout the entire game), or is he simply a means to an end? While it’s possible that someone without powers could go toe-to-toe with Cole (in a figurative sense) I can’t imagine him being the end all be all villain of the story. There has to be someone else that we haven’t seen yet.
Now you may all be wondering, “What about the Beast?” Considering you get your ass handed to you in the beginning of the game by said Beast, I doubt he’ll be in the game very much. One must wonder though if Cole will get the power he needs and then go and fight the Beast for round 2.
A Small Origin for the Beast
While I don’t expect (nor want) a large explanation of where the Beast came from, something would be nice. Even the Joker from the Dark Knight had a small origin. At the end of the first movie, in the scene between Batman and Gordon, Gordon says that because they’ve got Batman, this new guy’s appeared. That guy’s the Joker. Something small like that is all I want. Having this massive creature show up out of nowhere would seem cheap and silly. I need a reason for this thing’s appearance.
Interesting Side Quests
The side quests in the original inFamous were similar to those in Spider-man 2, fetch quest essentially. Go bring this to person A, or go get this from person B and bring it back, etc. The rest were find the hidden object or kill said number of bad guys. I want story-driven quests.
Little side stories in addition to the overarching plot would give them the ability to explore other areas of their mythology, possibly leave hints for the third game (one would assume this would at least be a trilogy, isn’t everything these days?) and so on and so forth.
Obviously there’s more that I would love to see in inFamous 2. New powers, better moral choices, and the possibility of your save file carrying over. All of this was covered though in IGN’s previews. Sucker Punch is looking into all of those.
What else do you think Sucker Punch could do in order to improve inFamous 2?
inFamous 2 is set to be released in 2011.
