When students enroll in beauty school it’s my belief that some do not comprehend the discipline that is involved. There is discipline within the guidelines of school, and there is self-discipline. Without both the experience in beauty school will not be worth the time nor the money that you invest in school.
Beauty school is offered full time and part time. In most schools if you choose to go full time school is Tuesday through Saturday. Part time involves Monday through Friday. Those who choose to go part time usually have a job as well. After working eight hours a day, and school five hours a night, they are exhausted to say the least by the end of the day. This is where self-discipline comes in. A part time commitment requires almost two years of schooling. Full time requires a one year commitment. I would definitely recommend full time if at all possible.
Each student is required to attend Freshman class. This class is where you learn your basics. It is my opinion that a student needs more than the basics to work on a customer once they leave the freshman class. Students are too apprehensive to want to work on the live customer, however it is not in your best interest to do so. Students think working on mannequins is crazy, but wouldn’t your rather mess up that hair cut on a mannequin as opposed to the live customer? The mannequin cannot yell at you for making the left side shorter than the right. The mannequin cannot file a complain with the school for burning the hair off for leaving the bleach on too long. Hopefully you get the point…. Freshman class is so important in your education. Embrace it!
Some people who attend beauty school have problems accepting constructive criticism. Trust me, this will come with the territory. Without constructive criticism you will never advance in your field. You cannot go into this thinking you know everything. You’ve watched your hair stylist cut your hair. It does not look difficult, but when you do one yourself, you will think differently. It is not as easy as it looks. Just wait until you want to fade than man’s haircut, or a man comes in and wants a flat top.
Beauty school is a great experience. Take advantage of everything your instructors teach you. Do not go in to the program and tell yourself, “oh I will never do perms, I do not want to do pedicures, etc.” Go into it, and learn everything. Keep reading these articles as you will learn from them. I promise!
