Knowing that following the Friday field cut only the first 47 Bassmaster Elite anglers will blast off on Fort Gibson Lake for day 3, the pros hit the scales today feeling the pressure. On the minds of many, was not just today’s finish but fishing for the post season.
Helping to put that pressure on the competition, the day 1 leader, Tommy Biffle didn’t disappoint on day 2. Claiming he had a 15 lb limit by 7:15am, he had the rest of the day to build on his bag. Culling his way to 18-9, he stays in the top spot with 38-4.
Kevin VanDam made a quick climb with his 10 fish limit landing him in 3rd. Asking the fans to, “spread the love” KVD attempted to convince the followers to find Skeet and McClelland tomorrow.
Cliff Pace stayed on pace to make Saturday’s cut and turned up a two day total of 34-3.
Rick Morris reeled in over 18 lbs on his remarkably strong RPM rods to rank 8th and shorten the gap between Gary Klein and Skeet Reese.
Skeet improved with nearly two pounds from his day 1 limit to land in 9th.
Matt Herren backed up his big bass bag from day 1, with a lighter load of 14-3 but still enough to take a top ten seat.
Mike McClelland said, “his big ones disappeared” and only brought to the dock a little over 13 lbs dropping him out of top ten.
Claiming “if he didn’t have bad luck, he would have no luck at all”, Ish Monroe, said he didn’t get the bites, and lost a shallow crankin’ double.
Unable to stay in the game when the weigh in wrapped up its final cut, Guy Eaker, saw his last bass on the Bassmaster scale with the announcement of his retirement from tournament fishing. With 32 years as an Elite fishermen and 287 events under his belt, Guy will take off in his 2011 Triton for fun fishing only from now on.
The Elite were whittled down to 47 today for Saturday’s send off. A final cut of twelve will take off Sunday for the last blast off of the Elite regular season.
