College is an exciting period for any college student attending for the first time. It can be a time of exploration, growth and learning from experiences, both good and bad. Many college students today have a difficult time balancing their school work with their personal interests. Although in most cases students attend college to further their education, get a bachelor’s degree to open opportunities for future career options, college also brings unexpected relationships. As we look closer at relationships such as dating, we can see that the focus spent on class work and studying can easily be overcome by the student’s new interest.
What can you do to help maintain a good relationship with someone in college and still stay on top of your class work?
- Define Your Relationship. Having a very honest and open dialog with your partner can enable a discussion about goals, interests, and hopes for the future. This is important because it lets both of you know that you hold education important and you are willing to make the relationship work while reaching your goals. This puts a strong value on school and on the relationship.
- Manage Your Time Wisely. With the internet being as popular as it is and websites like Facebook connecting people at the touch of a mouse, it’s easy to spend the time you should be studying communicating with your sweety. Focus on prioritizing what is important and urgent and create a task list to keep track of what you need to do.
- Use Technology. Today, there are many resources online that can help with time management and prioritizing. There are even resources that give you dating advice. Whatever the need is, search online and you might find a good strategy for your situation.
Why is this important?
According to a study done by a southern university, 184 undergraduates revealed that 94% of them have experienced a love relationship. Undergrads of age 19 and under were significantly more likely to believe in the common saying “love at first sight.” Additionally, involvement in a relationship was significantly associated with the romantic belief that love really does conquer it all. As these young students go into community colleges and four year universities, it’s important to know how to manage this relationships, school, and time.
For these college students needing to study, work, and maintain a study schedule, technology will be their friend. Technology is really in many parts of our lives and in use every day. Instead of having to see a boyfriend or girlfriend, students can simply send them a quick hello other ways to focus on studies. Ways to use technology include text messaging, Instant Messaging (IM), sending cell phone pictures (MMS), talking on cell phone, sending emails, and using video cams. Students can even take a few tips from these relationship clips to help with communication.
In sum, the best thing students can do to maintain a good grade point average (GPA), maintain a relationship, continued hobbies and interests is to manage time effectively while using online resources and communication as their allies.
