Today’s feature for Austen’s Emporium is an inspired romantic who loves Jane Austen. Loves her so much, in fact, that after discovering her in graduate school and watching the 1980 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, she was hooked and simply had to act.
Anna’s Trunk, run by Christine Lally, provides historical clothing, sachets and pillows with an Austen touch. The name, Anna’s Trunk, was inspired by Lally’s great grandmother (Anna) who came all the way from Norway through Ellis Island and settled in Minnesota. ‘There really IS a trunk and it was filled with the beautiful things my great grandmother brought with her on her journey to America.’
Tell me about the Austen items you make for your online stores:
I like to capture the romance of Jane Austen’s works. Little snippets here and there in the form of petite scented (or unscented) pillows… I love using quotations from the Austen novels and applying them to my little pillows. They provide a way to capture that romanticism that so many admire about the works of Jane Austen.
I also design Austen inspired graphics that I can also apply to my pillows. Sometimes I will use a vintage illustration along with a quote or other information from one of the novels. I really enjoy seeing how I can combine Miss Austen’s written word with an illustration of her beloved characters! I would like to expand the variety of my Austen inspired items in time for this holiday season.
How did you get started selling Austen items online?
I actually started selling Civil War/Victorian era reproduction undersleeves online and I was browsing around Etsy and I found some vintage illustrations from Sense and Sensibility. I loved them and bought them for myself but then started experimenting with something I could use them for.
Before I knew it, I had my first sachet/mini pillow. It seemed like a good companion item for the one and only item I had for sale in my shop at that time, so I listed it as a product for sale. I was delighted when I sold it so I started making more and here I am!
Who is your favorite Austen character?
That is a TOUGH question! I don’t think I can pick just one-they are all so unique! But if pressed, I would have to say that Miss Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth are my favorites. I love the fact that even though circumstances have not been very kind to them and though everything is telling them that they should give up, neither one of them is quite ready to do that. They both still cling to even the smallest hope that they may find each other again…and when they do, it’s great!
You can find Anna’s Trunk on Etsy or 1000 Markets!
