With the unemployment in Los Angeles County at 12.3 percent, according to the State of California Employment Development Department, services for the jobless and those making career changes are more important than ever. The Altadena Library announced in a news release that it has responded to this need by acquiring Career Transitions, an electronic resource offering a comprehensive guide to career change.
Access Career Transitions job services from the library or home
Residents of Altadena may access Career Transitions at the Altadena Library, both the main and Bob Lucas branch, or from any computer by going to the library web site and using a library card.
The application is self-guided and walks job seekers through the process of assessing strengths and interests, exploring new opportunities, preparing a resume, finding educational opportunities and networking advice, performing a comprehensive job search and applying online. Workers are provided with information about career paths, industries, companies, job availability, growth potential and professional associations.
Need for job & career services for unemployed on rise at libraries
The news release notes that librarians across the country report being overwhelmed with requests for materials to assist users who are making job-related decisions. Career Transitions encompasses the entire job search process, allowing Altadena Library users and the librarians assisting them to find answers, whether they are dealing with job loss, re-training needs or looking for new career paths.
“Career Transitions is a one-stop resource for people going through career change,” said Barbara Pearson, Library Director. “It comes at a time when people need help making life-changing career choices and libraries are becoming more and more involved in this process. This resource helps us increase the quality of our service and meet the needs of our patrons.”
The project is supported in whole by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.
The library offers a range of resources for job hunters, listed on the online employment and career resources page. The Altadena Library main is located at 600 E. Mariposa Street and the Bob Lucas branch is at 2659 N. Lincoln Avenue. Call (626) 798-0833 for information.
