There’s a somewhat unassuming looking business on West Cheltenham Ave in Elkins Park PA that holds a little secret. But, most likely, not for long! It houses a special cigar lounge, Tim Tang’s Lux Lounge. It’s a family run place that offers hospitality galore. Tim Tang and his father Tom, have blended a small smoke shop/lottery/convenience store and a slick cigar lounge with sizeable walk in humidor into several rooms in one location. The lounge is very comfortably appointed with unique modern sofas, loveseats, and chairs in dark cognac leather with gloss wood accents, glass topped tables, and a wall of windows that peers right into the walk-in. The walls are adorned with one of a kind artwork by Lars Tetens. Lux is a very suitable word to describe this environment indeed. In order to commemorate the opening of their operation, the Tangs decided to have a block party and invite all their clients, friends, and neighbors.
The second annual anniversary block party took place on Monday June 7th, a beautiful early summer night. There was food and beverage aplenty, with attendees that may have looked looked like a League of Nations assembly, but with the feel of a family reunion picnic, and with live music! Sure, there were the burgers and hotdogs you’d expect, but there was also a large spread of Korean delicacies( salad with ginger/garlic dressing, fried fish bites, dumplings, glass noodles, and more, all amazing!), and the highlight, fresh cooked Korean BBQ beef!
Lars Tetens, Musashi Sonne, and Travis Jon Waite all from Lars Tetens Enterprises were all on hand to talk cigars, play some of their eclectic music, and hang out with the appreciative crowd. What a blast!
The cigar smoked this evening was a special one, a Branque, one of the sizes in the SCP (Stone Cold Pimpin!) line. This is one of the highest caliber smokes made by LT and most likely not available at many/any retailers. Direct from Lars hand, this writer couldn’t resist lighting this special cigar ASAP. No ruler was handy, but the stick was minimum 6 inches by 60 ring, an oversize Toro or Corona Gordo perhaps, with a dark and mottled wrapper with an oily sheen. When asked, Lars did say that the wrapper was of Mexican origin, but no other information regarding construction was given. Mysterious! The aroma of a Lars product is half of the enjoyment, and this cigar did not disappoint. The nose was gigantic, with sillage that traveled about 2 feet from the stick. This one hit heavily with sandalwood and resinous notes (something like Nag Champa ), and a green scent image of celery. It cut cleanly, lit readily, and emitted copious clouds of smoke. The taste was of rich fermented tobacco and scented wood, with quite a spicy character. The cigar performed well with consistant flavors for almost 2 hours of cautious smoking. Some lighter work was required to keep an even burn going , most likely due to the thick wrapper leaf. Hints from Lars indicated that this cigar featured quite a heavy body, and he wasn’t kidding! Interestingly, the power of this cigar is there from the first few puffs, though a balanced experience overall, a solid meal is definitely recommended if you have the opportunity to partake of an SCP.
Big thanks to The Tang family and to Lars, Musashi, and Travis from Lars Tetens. Visit Ace Tobacco and the Lux Lounge at 419 W Cheltenham Avenue Elkins Park, PA 19027 or call (215) 782-8055, tell ’em Rob sent you and maybe you’ll get a prize!
