19 people have been sickened with an E. Coli outbreak in 23 states which has led to a massive recall of lettuce issued Thursday. At least 19 people are sick in Ohio, New York and Michigan with E. Coli and 12 have been hospitalized. 3 people have life-threatening symptoms, the Food and Drug Administration reported Thursday.
Freshway Foods from Sidney, Ohio issued a recall for romaine lettuce with the Freshway and Imperial Sysco brands in 23 states and the District of Columbia.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it was looking at 10 other cases probably linked to the outbreak.
The E. coli outbreak has greatly affected college students at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Ohio State in Columbus and Daemen College in Amherst, N.Y.
The lettuce may have been grown in Arizona and the FDA is investigating the case.
E. coli is a terrible infection that causes mild diarrhea in some people, while kidney damage can occur in other people. The 3 people that have been hospitalized were diagnosed with hemolytic uremic syndrome, which may cause bleeding in the brain or kidneys, according to the Huffington Post.
The lettuce has a “best if used by” date of May 12 or before, and also affects “grab and go” salads sold at Kroger, Giant Eagle, Ingles Markets and Marsh grocery stores, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.
The FDA reported that the lettuce was sold in Alabama, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
This is the second massive recall of lettuce in the last year. Last July, a lettuce recall was issued for 29 states, including in the state of Utah. The lettuce contained salmonella contamination.
