With the Detroit Red Wings ending their season on a sour note on Saturday night in San Jose, there are a lot of things to play out this off season. Will Nicklas Lidstrom retire? Will Steve Yzerman take a GM job elsewhere? Will Chris Osgood, Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby be back next year?
The answers to those questions will be answered in due time but below are my grades for the 2009-10 season. Feel free to leave your thoughts and grades as well.
Henrik Zetterberg (A-)—The future captain is the most complete forward on the roster.
Pavel Datsyuk (B+)—Datsyuk continues to show why he’s a top ten player in the NHL.
Johan Franzen (B+)—Had a shortened season due to injury but looked good when in the line-up.
Todd Bertuzzi (B-)—Stepped up when the injury bug hit. Here’s to hoping he’s back next season.
Valtteri Fippula (C+)—Exciting player who continues to get better.
Tomas Holmstrom (C)—Does his job to a tee but is getting older.
Darren Helm (C)—Fastest skater on the team but looks like a career second through fourth line guy.
Dan Cleary (C)—Great role player who has the ability to score 20 goals every season.
Justin Abdelkader (C)–Fairly or unfairly, the youngster has yet to live up to expectations.
Drew Miller (C)—Had a good regular season but disappeared in the playoffs.
Brad May (C-)—Played the goon role well but won’t be back next season.
Patrick Eaves (C-)—Played in 65 games this season and looked solid.
Jason Williams (C-)—Injuries slowed him down but look for him to rebound next season.
Kris Draper (D+)—One of Hockeytown’s favorites had really slowed down.
Kirk Maltby (D+)—See above
Nicklas Lidstrom (B+)—While he’s slowed down, he’s still “the” man.
Brian Rafalski (B+)—He and Lidstrom make up arguably the defensemen pairing in the NHL.
Brad Stuart (B-)—Other than his dismal +/- rating, you can’t ask for a better No. 4 blue liner.
Niklas Kronwall (C)—Injuries in the regular season were followed with a bad playoff performance.
Jonathan Ericsson (C-)—After a breakout season last year, Ericsson struggled at times this season.
Andreas Lilja (D)—Didn’t play much and when he did, he did not play well.
Jimmy Howard- (B+)—A great rookie regular season was a bit overshadowed by an up and down post season.
Chris Osgood (C-)—Did win a hockey game in the calendar year of 2010.
